Democracy is Our #2 Export (Right Behind Bombs)
To keep our way of living, we want to move away from free trade:
Six in 10 Republicans in the poll agreed with a statement that free trade has been bad for the U.S. and said they would agree with a Republican candidate who favored tougher regulations to limit foreign imports. That represents a challenge for Republican candidates who generally echo Mr. Bush's calls for continued trade expansion, and reflects a substantial shift in sentiment from eight years ago.
Kinda makes you appreciate how hollow the free market meme is.
But those in power want you in financial ruin so you cede more control to them. Unless you are doing something creative or something with passion someone will program a computer to do what you are doing or someone in the third world will do it for $3 to $40 a day. Get ready of those living standards to get equalized across the borders. Welcome to freedom and free markets.

That's utter nonsense. There's free trade within the American states, yet there is not a uniform standard of living across all states.
Free trade increases prosperity.
As well, individuals and companies should be free to choose to do business with whomever they like. If I choose to do business with someone in a third world country, what right does the government have to interfere with this or put hurdles in my way.
But I totally agree with:
>But those in power want you in financial ruin so you cede more control to them.
My point was that free markets are not really free. Look at the attempted regulation to screw up the web. Or the billions of dollars that were granted to telecom companies to upgrade the web. They never upgraded the underlying architecture but want to block out competitors and have freely spied on US consumers in exchange for maintaining their current market position.
Research into the history of why and how copyright came about. It sure seems a lot like how the current telecom companies gained significant control over the web.
It is no secret that those in power do not like the idea of free trade, free speech, and free markets, only pushing the hollow idealistic memes AFTER they got their money, to make it look as though they were honest while doing so.
Also if you met a ton of call center employees in Manila and enjoyed delicious $3 meals you could appreciate how the average American's job security and real wages are quietly falling like a rock.
As communications get cheaper, more reliable, and more innovative that trend will only grow.
